Guide to India
A land of vibrant colors, exotic tastes, breathtaking scenery, India has had varied effects on every traveler. By the end of your visit, whether you are glad to head back home or wish you had extended your stay, memories of your trip to India will remain with you for a lifetime.
Places to See
Be it monuments like the iconic Taj Mahal, the ruins of the Vijayanagar Empire in Hampi, remnants of the British Raj in Kolkatta or Delhi, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta or thousands of temples that dot this country; be it the chilly hill stations, beautiful deserts, cool backwaters or miles of beaches and dense forests, this country has a little bit of everything any traveler could ever ask for. And to top it all, it has a rich past and vivid and vibrant culture.
Weather
Here’s the truth of the matter. Northern India could as well be another country when it comes to the weather, considering the vastness of this land. But let’s settle down to three main seasons: hot, wet and cool. Obviously we would like to play safe, so October through February would be a good time, when it’s not too hot, not too wet and just about cool. But you are definitely welcome any time of the year.
Language / Communication
A product of the British rule, English is unofficially, the official language, at least as far as travelers are concerned. From the impeccable English to a smattering of English, cutting across the strata, you can find all levels of English-speaking populace. Hindi is the official language, but is spoken principally by the Hindi-belt Northcentral India. Otherwise, each state speaks its own language.
Transport
Fly in and out of the country through Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, though Delhi is the cheapest place to buy air tickets, and we would definitely know that. Within the country, states are well connected by flights, railway and road (busses). A popular local transport in most parts of India is the ubiquitous autorickshaw (three-wheeler scooter, with a tin body, carrying passengers on the rear seat).
Festivals
Give us an occasion and we will burst into festivities! Be it the famous boat race in Kerala in August / September, the desert festival in Rajasthan in January / February, Deepavali in South India or the Durga Puja in Bengal in October / November, or marriage and deity processions, India has not one but thousands of reasons to celebrate. If festivals is what you want to experience, let us know in advance, so that we can make necessary arrangements and give you a reason to celebrate as well.
